Restaurants Are Talking Whoopie Pies: Where Did They Come From?

Whoopie pies are a beloved dessert that generations of Americans have enjoyed for years. These delicious treats consist of two soft, cake-like cookies sandwiched together with a creamy filling. But where did they come from, and how did they become such a popular dessert? This month, one of your favorite restaurants, Nadeau’s, is here to unravel the mystery!

Whoopie Pies in Pennsylvania Amish Country

The origins of whoopie pies are somewhat shrouded in mystery, but most historians agree that they were first created in Pennsylvania Amish country, in the early 20th century. Legend says that Amish women would bake leftover cake batter into small, round cakes. They would then fill them with leftover frosting, creating what they called “hucklebucks” or “gobs.”

The name “whoopie pie” is thought to have come from the enthusiastic cries of children who would find these treats in their lunch boxes. When a child would discover one in their lunch, they would exclaim “whoopie!” in delight, and the name stuck.

Whoopie Pies in New England and Beyond

Another theory is that whoopie pies were created by bakers who wanted to use leftover cake batter and frosting in a way that would be easy to transport and sell. These portable treats quickly became popular at fairs and bake sales throughout New England, eventually spreading to other parts of the country.

In Maine, whoopie pies are so beloved that they were declared the official state treat in 2011. The popularity of whoopie pies in Maine can be traced back to the Depression era. During this time, they were a popular treat among blue-collar workers.

The Many Flavors of Whoopie Pies

Today, whoopie pies can be found in bakeries and supermarkets across the United States, and have even gained international popularity. While the classic chocolate cake and vanilla filling combination is still the most popular, bakers have experimented with a wide range of flavors, from pumpkin to red velvet to peanut butter.
