Fun Facts About Fries: Why We’re Still Craving Them After National Fry Day

National Fry Day may have come and gone on July 11, but let’s be real, when are we not in the mood for crispy, golden fries? At Nadeau’s Subs, we serve up the kind of classic fries that never go out of style: hot, fresh, and the perfect side to any sub on our menu. Across the country, fries are one of the most beloved sides in restaurants, and they’ve got a surprisingly rich (and salty) history behind them.

Where Did Fries Come From?

Despite being called French fries, many food historians believe the real birthplace of fries is Belgium. According to legend, villagers along the River Meuse used to fry small fish, but when the river froze, they cut potatoes into fish-like shapes and fried those instead. American soldiers stationed there during World War I reportedly gave them the name “French fries” because French was the local language.

Wherever they came from, fries found their way into restaurants around the world, and they’ve stayed there ever since.

Fry Facts You Might Not Know

  • Americans eat about 30 pounds of French fries per person each year.
That’s a lot of potatoes, and for good reason!
  • The longest fry on record was over 34 inches long.
That may not be what we’re serving at Nadeau’s, but you will get a satisfying stack every time.
  • Thomas Jefferson helped popularize fries in America.
He served them at the White House after discovering the dish in France in the late 1700s.

Why Classic Fries Still Win

Truffle oil, sweet potato, waffle cut — trendy fries come and go. But at restaurants like Nadeau’s Subs, we stick with what works: golden, crispy, no-frills fries that hit the spot every time.

Celebrate Fries Year-Round at Our Restaurants!

National Fry Day may be behind us, but the celebration doesn’t have to stop. At Nadeau’s Subs, we’re proud to serve up the kind of fries that pair perfectly with any sub and keep customers coming back. Some restaurants may overdo it, but we just do it right!
